Rato Bangla Awarded by UNESCO

Rato Bangala Foundation (RBF) has been awarded the UNESCO-Hamdan Education Prize for 2012 for ‘the quality of its teacher training programme in the Dailekh School Project’.

The project, implemented in partnership with Education Ministry, seeks to improve the standard of instruction in all 520 primary schools in Dailekh by training and motivating teachers.

RBF shares a purse of US$ 270,000 with two other institutions, the African Institute for the Mathematical Sciences Schools Enrichment Centre of South Africa and the Banquo del Libro library network of Venezuela.

The award, known as the ‘UNESCO-Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers’ was announced at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris yesterday.

The prize is given every two years, and this year’s award will be given in Dubai on April 24 . “We are proud of this recognition, which validates our collaboration with government authorities as well as local communities to improve quality of education in government schools,” said Shanta Dixit, director of the Foundation. Dixit said the Foundation plans to utilise its US$ 90,000 share of the prize for projects in Dailekh and Gulmi districts.

As a non-governmental organisation focused on enhancing quality of teachers through training, RBF started the Dailekh School Project in 2009. The aim of the project is to train each and every primary school teacher in Dailekh, a large hill district of Western Nepal.

RBF has provided in-depth training to over 1,800 teachers and guided school officials and community leaders.

Prof Ora Kwo, education expert at the University of Hong Kong and jury member for the 2012 Prize, said, “In Dailekh, one of the poorest districts of Nepal, material resources for education cannot compare with those in well-developed societies. Yet the hope of ‘Education for All’ has been brought alive here by the collective leadership force: there is no single hero, and no competition for recognition.”
