The word Democracy is derived from the Greek words ‘Demos’ and ‘Cratia’. Demos refer to people and Cratia refers to power. So, Democracy refers to power of the people. Democracy is a popular form of political system. In democracy, sovereignty lies in the people of the country.
The 16th President of America, Abraham Lincoln defined Democracy as the ‘Democracy is the government of the people, by the people & for the people.
Equality, liberty and fraternity are the three pillars of democracy. Equality refers to treating people equally. Liberty refers to the rights to the feeling of friendship.
There are several advantages of democracy. In democracy, people are not discriminated under the grounds of caste, sex, religion etc. there are feeling of nationality. As people have their share to form government. So, all people love their nation. People make the law and conduct the administration. Public welfare is given top priority.
Democracy provides proper atmosphere for the social and economic development. It makes people aware about fundamental rights. Democracy is such a political form where all people have their share and they can express their opinion. People can get all their rights such as right to read, right to religion, right to education etc. If they have not been well provided with their rights, they can raise their voice against it.
On the other hand, there are some of the disadvantages of democracy. Sometime democracy may bring the rule of incompetent people. There is bitterness and clashes between the parties. Democracy is the government for the majority and there is little consideration for the minority. Sometime, democracy may be the administration of rich people by rigging vote. Competent people of minority vote may not have place. As a result, democracy becomes the rule of incompetent people. Due to this, development of country will adversely be affected.
There are various condition required to have a successful democracy. People should be faithful. They should run government according to laws people should know what democracy is. It should promote national unity. It should promote healthy and honest public opinion.
Democracy is not the best form of government but there is no other best form of government than democracy.
In Nepal , the autocratic administration was established after 1903 B.S by Junga Bahadur Rana. Consequently, the armed revolution of 2007 B.S brought the end of Ranas and the system of multi-party democracy was established. It was not for the good of the people. After 10 years, on Poush 2017 B.S. King Mahendra demolished multi-party system and introduced partyless Panchayat System. These unconstitutional steps were not linked by politics conscious people. Fire kept burning within their heart. The revolution of 2046 against the partyless Panchayat System brought the end of Panchayat System. Democracy was started. At last, King Birendra announced a referendum to choose between the panchayat system and multi-party system. This referendum was held on 20th Baishak 2037. The result went on the favor of Panchayat System.
In context of Nepal , the people here are not having true form of democracy. There is a bitterness and clashes between the parties. People are not feeling benefit of democracy. The criminal activities are increasing day by day that has made the life of Nepali people insecure. There is no moral based politician. The ministers have been change that hampers the development of a nation. Similarly, corruption is also increasing these days. The plans that are made are not being implemented. Democratic norms are not being followed. Politics of Nepal has been taken as business like buying and selling. The number of our migrants is increasing. Our country has suffered from these deficits. There is inter & intra conflicts between the parties. Similarly, these days autocratic forces are rising. There is delay in decision even to select a prime minister. Date to form the new constitution has been changed. These are some of the problems that people of Nepal are facing.
Overall, success of democracy is in the hand of people. So, we must contribute from our side to have a successful democracy.
